Fujii Kaze is back promoting Prema, with the music video for “You” followed by a new version featuring UMI on September 25.

I still remember when UMI went viral after singing with Fujii Kaze in a stadium. Although I discovered her a little later, I’ve since grown to appreciate her collaborations and her own work as a singer-songwriter. So naturally, I was curious when I heard she would be featured on an already existing song. My biggest question was whether UMI could actually bring something new to “You.”

The answer is yes, although I’m still questioning whether she was the right choice for this particular song.

Both artists have incredibly soft voices, and their vocals blend almost effortlessly. Perhaps a little too effortlessly. Throughout the song, I kept waiting for a moment when UMI would establish her own presence, yet their voices are so similar in texture that the collaboration rarely offers much contrast. The key also seems a little high for her to fully explore her vocal qualities. I almost wish she had recorded her own version of the song, with an arrangement that allowed her voice to take a different direction.

The highlight, surprisingly, is UMI’s newly written verse. It fits naturally into the song, and I actually prefer it to the original. It’s the one moment when I genuinely appreciate having her on the track. Still, I wonder what the collaboration could have sounded like with more adventurous vocal arrangements, or what the song might have gained from a featured artist with a completely different vocal character.

Ultimately, it’s their collaboration, and they clearly enjoy making music together. There’s something genuinely lovely about watching two friends sing in the wind. I just wish that chemistry had translated into something equally interesting musically.
