Take Off the Mask is Z.Way 王子为’s new single, released by MOIN. Z.Way wrote and produced the track himself, also handling the mixing and mastering, with Gloria 王璐琳 featured on female vocals.

Z.Way has always been interested in moving between Eastern and Western musical languages. On this track, that crossover feels natural. It makes me imagine what might have happened if Khalil Fong and Jay Chou had met fifteen years ago and decided to make an Eastern-leaning R&B track together, which is something rooted in Chinese musical sensibility, but shaped through soul and R&B.

Z.Way described the colors and charm of Chinese music as something almost instinctive, like flowing in the blood, while Western musical language represents a space for exploration and pushing boundaries. For this song, he wanted the melodic contour, vocal phrasing, rhythm, and harmony to carry elements of R&B and soul while still reflecting an Eastern sensibility. But rather than forcing those elements together, he eventually let instinct guide the process.

Musically, the vocal harmonies in the intro immediately caught me. The way the voices are stacked has a slight Musiq Soulchild feel. Layer after layer, dense but still mixed well, leaving a lot of room for imagination. The combination of Chinese traditional opera-inspired vocal phrasing and soul harmony works surprisingly well; the two languages finally sit together.

Around 2:33, the descending chord progression creates such a smooth transition into the second pre-chorus. The groove and drum sound also carry a distinctly early-2010s texture that instantly brings me back to the MP3 era, when so many C-pop classics emerged.

Z.Way’s vocal technique really stands out here as always. His powerful mixed voice gives the higher register both weight and brightness.
