I’m definitely biased with this one because yeemz is one of my favorite singer-songwriters, and especially one of my favorites when it comes to creative string arrangements. But Brace for Impact is just so fun.

The song is basically about knowing you have a habit of preparing for the worst even when nothing is actually wrong yet. “Emotional disaster prepper / giant shadows, tiny terrors.” Something good can be starting and somehow your brain is already ten steps ahead, imagining how it ends. I also love how funny some of the writing gets without losing that anxiety underneath it, especially the line about monetizing the freckles on her face.

But let’s talk about the strings. Yeemz posted a breakdown of how she made the song, and you should really watch it! The stacked cello glissandos keep piling on top of each other until they eventually turn into that huge drop, and it’s such a cool way of building tension. It almost sounds like the arrangement itself is panicking more and more before everything finally hits.

This song takes overthinking and makes it sound genuinely exciting. The lyrics are bracing for a disaster that may never happen, while the cello keeps building like one absolutely is.
