As a debut single from an indie artist, Feel Better is a ridiculously high place to start. My first thought listening to it was simply: the vocal is serving, the emotion is bursting. Kuper gives the song a proper pop performance, and that confidence is probably what caught me most on a first listen. For your first song to already make the voice feel like the main event is kind of crazy.

What also makes Feel Better work for me is where Kuper chooses to enter the breakup story. She wrote the song after being with someone who, according to Kuper, tried to control her life and her music and make her believe she couldn’t do any of it without him. So Feel Better comes from the point where that power starts disappearing. The whole idea is basically: I loved you, you hurt me, but I finally like myself enough to know that being without you is better than staying inside whatever this was.

This gives us an actual reason to pay attention to what she releases next.
