Caroline Rose’s “Chow Mein” is basically one really, really bad night out. There’s Chinese food spilling in the back of a cab, a weird warehouse party, a bouncer asking for a password, and Rose already being drunk because apparently a cocktail was too expensive. Somehow the entire time they keep going, “I am doing fine,” which gets funnier every time because clearly… no.
Rose sounds like someone trying incredibly hard to keep their dignity while the night is actively taking it away from them. The lyrics are packed with some dumb little details that make the whole thing play out like you’re hearing a friend tell you what happened the morning after. There is even this moment where something more serious seems to peek through, with Rose mentioning someone who might never forgive them, but the song doesn’t suddenly stop and become dramatic about it.
I don’t know what exactly happened to Caroline Rose that night, but I’m glad they wrote a song about it.
