Funeral Song

Release date: Aug 7, 2026

Genre: Indie Pop

Label: GOOD BOY RECORDS

On Aug 7, marinelli released Funeral Song, and this song genuinely pissed me off a little bit as it is so unbelievably restless. He starts talking about death, makes a stupid sex joke about death, suddenly we are playing video games with friends, then we are at a funeral home staring at a mini fridge with the blood of Christ and some limes in it, then a priest is cutting his eulogy short, then the Lakers are on, then LeBron is there, then God, meditation, writer’s block… where the hell are we going? There isn’t even a proper chorus. Marinelli literally tells us that himself.

And somehow, that mess is exactly why it got to me. Grief probably doesn’t politely sit down and give you one beautiful, coherent thought at a time. Your brain can be thinking about someone dying and then notice something completely ridiculous in the room. You can be trying to give your dad’s eulogy and suddenly someone is telling you there is another funeral at two. You can walk into another room and the Lakers are playing. Marinelli has said the song was partly inspired by actually being cut off during his father’s eulogy.

By the end, Funeral Song still refuses to clean itself up. Marinelli talks about not being able to sit still, announces his writer’s block, breaks the fourth wall because he knows we are listening, and finally turns back toward death itself. There is something weirdly moving about spending the whole song running away from a straightforward statement about grief, only to end up confronting death anyway. It sounds scattered because the person inside it is scattered. Funny, uncomfortable, stupid in places, genuinely sad in others,  and annoyingly, somehow all of those things belong in the same song. Song of the year so far. It hits me.
