“nan peng you” was released on September 10, 2026, as part of Helena Gao’s EP “Gao Dan Dan”. She wrote and produced the project herself. She described this EP as a way of reconnecting with a Chinese identity that had long felt distant, while its sound draws from both Shanghai’s underground nightlife and the Scandinavian alternative-pop environment she grew up in.

Throughout the song, she repeatedly insists that she is not looking for a boyfriend, yet the tension comes from the contradiction between “I’ve decided not to be with you” and “if you came back, I would probably still let you in.” Instead of simply saying, “I miss you,” she recalls a specific memory, revealing how stubbornly that feeling remains even as she tries to keep her emotions restrained.

Musically, this song stays rooted in electronic pop. The way Gao processes her vocals and shapes the production reminds me slightly of Oklou, especially in the airy vocal treatment and delicate electronic textures. A simple synth lead introduced at the beginning keeps the arrangement direct and leaves space for her floating vocals. Percussion gradually enters around the chorus.

The sudden octave-up vocal line and the more chaotic vocal chops in the chorus sharply lift the energy. I also love her use of “wo wen ni ai wo you duo shen” (“I ask you how deeply you love me”), the reverse of the familiar phrase “ni wen wo ai ni you duo shen” from the classic Mandarin song “The Moon Represents My Heart.”
