On Sep 9, Clover Stieve released her new single Antidote. The idea is pretty direct: life keeps knocking you around, you start spiraling, and one person becomes the thing that brings you back. Clover doesn’t make the metaphor complicated. She sings about nosebleeds, aching bones, getting her “ass kicked,” then coming home to someone who can hold her, kiss her, and calm everything down. Even the more romantic moments stay very physical, especially the image of making love in the kitchen and later letting this person “run through” her veins. The whole song treats love almost like medicine, something that moves through the body instead of just sitting in the background as an emotion.

What really gives the track its size is Clover’s voice. She has this huge, open delivery that immediately reminds me of Florence + the Machine, especially when she starts pushing into the higher parts and letting the notes stretch instead of keeping everything super clean and controlled. There’s some roughness around the edges that makes it hit harder. The instrumental gives her enough room to really open up too, so even though the writing itself is intimate, the song never sounds tiny. It has that dramatic indie rock and folk-pop pull where one line can start conversational and end almost like she is singing it across a field.

The word antidote is definitely a familiar love-song metaphor, and I don’t think the song is trying to reinvent it. What makes it land more for me is the context around Clover’s upcoming album Born to Live, which came out of a period of major grief in her life and eventually became about finding love, joy, anger, heartbreak, and some way forward all at once. With that in mind, Antidote reads less like “you make me feel better” and more like finding someone who can still reach you after life has already taken a lot out of you. The idea is simple, while the voice, the physical writing, and the weight behind it give the song much more to hold onto.
