Diary, a five piece out of NYC, released their debut album Spiral Bound. I first found them through their social posts, which is increasingly how I discover music now. Their visuals caught my attention first. Everything looked specific, slightly strange, and the clips were catchy enough to pull me into the album. After the two singles released before the album, “Spin the Bottle” comes in early on Spiral Bound and fits perfectly into the last stretch of 2026 summer heat.

Bright jangly guitars sit over a quick rhythm section, with bass giving the track a steady bounce and backing vocals widening the chorus without making it oversized. The arrangement stays light and compact, moving quickly from verse to chorus and keeping the hook at the center. “I’m not myself, I can be someone else” lands almost immediately, and the repetition gives the song its circular motion.

The lyrics are much stranger than the music first suggests. A first edition psychic bible, linoleum floors, strange geometry, tea leaves and a melting basement all appear within a song that is otherwise extremely easy to sing along to. Those images also match the visual language Diary has already built around themselves. “Spin the Bottle” is bright and melodic on the surface, with something more peculiar running through almost every line.
