Mixed Emotions

Release date: Aug 31, 2026

Genre: Funk Pop

Label: Independent

If we ever mixed R&B, funk and jazz with a very cinematic visual and an open heart, Angelina Cara’s new single Mixed Emotions might be the perfect answer.

It’s only 2:47, but Mixed Emotions feels weirdly huge. The bass guitar has this splendid, almost slippery groove that carries the song forward, locked in with drums that make it impossible for the track to ever sit still. But then Angelina keeps throwing new things into the frame: bold Synclavier, keytar, layers of keys, all those sounds that could easily turn into retro cosplay, but here they make the song feel almost unreal. Like a funk band playing inside a movie set where the lighting keeps changing.

This is a feast and captures the best instrumental secion. The rhythm is incredibly tight, the keys can get glossy and strange, and the voice sits right in the middle of all of it with something much more vulnerable. So the “mixed” part isn’t only in the emotions she’s singing about, as you can hear it in the track itself. Warm but restless, groovy but kind of anxious, polished but still very human.

Angelina is also very much an artist in the fullest sense of the word. She sings, writes, produces, and works visually, with artwork and imagery carrying into the way she presents her music. That side of her practice shows up clearly in Mixed Emotions. Every sound seems to have a visual weight to it. The Synclavier, keytar, bass and keys each bring in a different color, and the song keeps finding new corners of the same world within 2:47. Her work has always reached beyond the recording itself, with cinema, illustration and world building playing a real role in how she develops a project.

Angelina said this is the last single before her album, and, technically, the first song on it. Which makes a lot more sense after hearing it. Mixed Emotions is like opening a door and immediately being dropped somewhere in the middle of Angelina Cara’s world.
