Kill Me immediately caught my ears and, honestly, my eyes too, since I first heard it at the planetarium experience before the album came out.

Phoebe’s delivery barely changes, but the production keeps pulling the song somewhere stranger. It begins quietly with gentle strumming and scattered electronic sounds, then Nick Zinner’s guitar comes in near the end and suddenly breaks the whole song open. Phoebe said she spends the entire track waiting to hear his part, which makes every repeated “wait” even better. The song itself is holding its breath.

Friends are getting married, she is remembering being twenty-one, and someone new has taught her that she knows nothing. It could be about love, aging, or being scared because you finally have something to lose. I don’t really want to solve it. I just know it killed me. Wait.
