The Brooklyn-based folk singer Nathan Mattingly released his debut single on Aug 7, 2026. There is something kind of funny about how alive Nathan Mattingly’s “Prodigal Son” sounds considering how much emotional baggage it is carrying. The stomps, claps and acoustic folk energy immediately give it this big, communal feeling, almost like something you could yell along to with a room full of people, while Nathan is basically singing about walking away from a community he once belonged to.

And then you get to “I ain’t your prodigal son,” which is really the line that clicked everything into place for me. The prodigal son is supposed to leave and eventually find his way back home. Nathan really does not give us that ending. There is all this religious language floating through the song – righteousness, the devil, sin, fire – but instead of using it to preach anything, he wrestles with the words themselves. It sounds like someone who has heard these ideas for years and is now deciding which ones actually belong to him.

Musically, the song keeps building and building until all these voices come in and it almost becomes a choral section, which I did not really expect when it started. Then it suddenly pulls everything away and goes back to just Nathan and the guitar. That switch is probably one of my favorite parts of the song — it gets huge for a second, then leaves him completely exposed again. “Prodigal Son” is about religious deconstruction, and what stays with me more is the idea of leaving somewhere people still expect you to call home. Maybe you are not lost. Maybe you just kept walking.
