Ben Kessler’s new song “Anything Anything” is really really catchy. The chorus gets stuck in your head almost immediately, and the repetition of “I would do anything, anything” works really well for that. At the same time, I do expect a little more for the first few listens. The idea is clear from the start, and once you hear the chorus, you can kind of predict where the rest of the song is going.

There are still some really nice details in the lyrics. The tapping in the wall, the cars in the rain and especially the three-legged cat all show how he is looking for signs from this person everywhere. I just wish the song pushed those ideas a little further, because the verses set up something more strange and specific, while the chorus brings it back to a more familiar kind of longing.

His voice is what adds the most to the song for me. It has this really textured, slightly rough quality in the verses, and then he moves into a much lighter falsetto that makes the chorus open up. Even when the song itself gets predictable, his vocal keeps it interesting and gives the track a lot more personality. This song sets great expectations to the upcoming new album.
