Let the Drummer Kick

Release date: Jul 20, 2026

Genre: Experimental/Alt Pop

Label: Independent

Inspired by Citizen Cope’s song of the same name, Chinese indie artist and rising star Starstar (yes, i wrote three stars in a row lol) just released “Let the Drummer Kick.” And honestly, the title tells you exactly what the song is doing. The drum loop keeps going and going, and somehow it never gets annoying. It is kind of campy, kind of hypnotic, and very easy to get stuck in your head.

The production is so minimal, but it is the good kind of minimal. It reminds me a lot of Lorde when she strips everything back and lets one beat carry most of the song. The drums are super crisp, the vocals sit really close, and there are only a few little sounds coming in around them. Nothing is overdone. It knows exactly when to stop adding things.

Yeah, I really think Starstar is going to be big. She already has such a clear taste and knows how to make something simple still sound specific to her. The next big star? Maybe double it. Starstar.
