Fann, a Chinese indie singer-songwriter, has released her new single “风铃(wind chime),”, the first track from her upcoming second album. She jokingly wrote on social media that the song comes with its own breeze, so there is no need to turn on the air conditioner, or maybe you can even set the temperature a little higher.

What makes the release even more impressive is how deeply involved Fann was in almost every part of the process. She wrote the melody and lyrics, handled the production, and recorded the guitar herself, with only the mixing and mastering completed by others. She also directed the music video, developing the original concept and even taking part in the final editing.

Fann’s music is difficult to place within one specific genre, but her artistic identity already feels clear and fully formed. She initially wrote “风铃(wind chime) ” on guitar, hoping to draw listeners into what she felt, or perhaps what she imagined while writing it: skin against skin, shadows seen in extreme close-up, love slowly mutating into something unfamiliar, and pain finally bursting open.

The song is built around guitar with hollow vibes. Fann sings in a soft, breathy voice, which makes the emotions feel close and delicate. The deep drums give the track a wide, empty feeling, like standing alone in a quiet yard with only the wind around you. That same loneliness appears in the music video, where Fann keeps running through a forest. In the second half, more layers slowly come in. The wordless vocals and repeated plucked sounds make the song feel more tense, especially when she sings, “I’m afraid to be your wind chime.”

“风铃” feels soft and quietly tense, with layers of emotion beneath the surface.
