The Avalanches, known for their sample collages, released their latest album, No Bad Memories, on Oct. 16, 2026. The album explores how advertising jingles, sonic logos, and the sounds of outdated technology become part of our memories. Their feelings about those sounds are hard to explain: they recognize that ads sell an ideal version of life, yet they still miss the music and visuals.
This song they sample electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani demonstrating a synthesizer on a 1980 episode of the children’s educational show 3-2-1 Contact. In the clip, she invites people to guess what a sound is, then explains how the instrument works. She describes sound as vibration in the air and shows how an oscilloscope displays the waveform of the audio signal, which makes people curious about how those sounds are created.
Another key sample is a pitched-up vocal from The Three Degrees’ “The Heaven I Need,” a 1985 song produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. The line “our love is alive” becomes a recurring hook throughout the track, yet it’s not even in the chorus in the original song.
The song opens with bright and dreamy synth melodies alongside Suzanne’s gentle speaking voice, giving it a nostalgic feel. The pulsing bass then comes in, adding a bouncy, buoyant energy. The low-end pulse keeps the track moving forward and fits the title so well.
These 1980s recordings come together, but there’s so much life. It’s a new release, but it feels like the future as someone might have imagined it forty years ago. People teach, listen, feel, and love what they love. Everything feels alive.
