Rachel McAdams Movies – Brendan Abernathy

Release date: Oct 23, 2026

Genre: Indie Folk / Folk-Pop

Label: Independent

Georgia-based singer-songwriter Brendan Abernathy released his latest EP, Seasons Change, Feelings Do Not, featuring the focus track “Rachel McAdams Movies.” Even before listening, the lyrics raise a curious question: Is 2008 a reference to a particular Rachel McAdams film, or a nostalgic shorthand for an entire era of Hollywood romance? Either way, the reference introduces a narrator who still believes in the love stories he grew up watching, even as his own has fallen apart.

What makes the song particularly touching is the narrator’s reason for struggling to move on. “My parents are still together, so I still believe in love” reveals a romantic idealism shaped by his own upbringing. Having witnessed a lasting relationship, he expects something similar for himself. Yet his admission that the relationship would have failed even if he’d done everything right reveals a painful realization: love isn’t necessarily a reward for doing the right things. That tension gives the familiar heartbreak narrative a more personal weight.

His sincere vocal delivery carries that vulnerability, accompanied by a harmonica that lends the song its warm, nostalgic Americana character. The strings gradually introduce a more cinematic atmosphere, culminating in a dramatic instrumental ending. Their presence feels especially fitting for a song that repeatedly returns to romantic movies. The narrator keeps encountering fictional love stories that remind him of everything he’s lost, while the arrangement gives his own heartbreak the grandeur of a Hollywood finale.

In the end, he gets the soundtrack to a great romance, but not the romance itself.
