FVN is an emerging artist from Zhengzhou, China, who recently signed with RollDice Records. DOLLARZOO, another artist on the label, is one of my favoirtes. I’ve followed RollDice for several years, and the label continues to discover new voices in China’s independent hip-hop scene.

“what u hiding” explores FVN’s struggle with perfectionism. He describes how the fear of others noticing his imperfections kept him from putting himself out there. Now, he’s finding the courage to step forward and be seen. I first discovered him through his videos on Douyin (the Chinese version of Tiktok). His posts promoting this single has received nearly 4k likes in total. I was hooked from the very first second and immediately wanted to hear the full song.

The song opens straight into the chorus, with FVN singing “what u hiding” over a clean, laid-back groove that instantly makes people want to dance. I was impressed by both the production and his vocal performance. In the verses, his rap flow reminds me of Tyler, the Creator, while the crisp, dry drums bring Pharrel Williams to mind. His delivery is relaxed and unforced, and he makes imaginative use of a wide vocal range. Beneath the catchy groove, there’re plenty of subtle synth and percussion details to pick up on.

After two more rounds of the chorus, an orchestral part opens up a whole new world. The shift feels like he finding the confidence to take the next step and let himself be seen.

“Put my chain on, put my ring on.”

This song is just an intro taking us into FVN’s world, but it already feels surprisingly complete. I have a feeling there’s a lot more to come.
