After hearing just a few tracks from Life 1 when I randomly clicked into the album on the subway, I was already calling it my album of the year. “Hell of a time” is one of my favorites on the album. Released on October 1, 2026, Life 1 brings together several genres I love: electronica, hip-hop, and jazz, with Quadeca’s introspective songwriting tying it all together. His music is hard to pin down to a single genre, and I love how these influences come together so naturally.
I wanna hear you say, “We had a hell of a time”
Be that as it may, we had a hell of a time
No matter what they say, we had a hell of a time
I know, I know the palm of your hand like the back of mine
The intro is built around a dance beat and familiar electronic effects, with chopped “oh-oh” vocals looping in the background, almost like a synth. A dramatic piano part leads into the chorus, and I love the call-and-response between the bass and his vocals as he sings, “I know, I know the palm of your hand like the back of mine.” Orchestral layers then come in, adding a grand feel. Then everything suddenly drops out, leaving only the vocals and the beat. The inspiring part is how he combines quirky, bouncy sound design with the emotional sweep of orchestral music.
In the outro, the beat disappears, leaving the orchestra part and chopped vocals to build up emotion. The central lyrics return, “I know the palm of your hand like the back of mine,” paired with a delicate melody that starts over warm B major harmony at the end.
The song captures both sadness and gratitude as he looks back on a relationship. There’s a bittersweet feeling of accepting that it’s over while remembering what a hell of a time they shared together.
What draws me most to Quadeca’s music is how he takes the best elements of pop music, blends them together, and adds his own twist. It all comes together in a musical world.
