Mamiko Suzuki brings the summer chill back even though it’s officially getting cold in autumn. Best known as one half of the rap duo chelmico, which mainly focuses on hip-hop, rap and J-pop, Mamiko’s new song “if you want my love” goes in a more calypso-jazz direction while still keeping her signature speaking-rap style. She has been consistently dropping singles, and this track particularly brings back some of the sound of last summer’s “chuva,” where jazz and samba influences already started taking more space than her usual rap-heavy sound.
With a disarmingly simple opening of jazzy piano chords, Mamiko keeps her voice close and conversational before the chorus hits right away. With piano-led jazz harmony, bouncing upright bass, light percussion and a conversational, melodic trumpet, the arrangement behaves almost like two people awkwardly and cutely falling in love: playful, flirtatious and never rushing anything. The lyrics focus on that tiny space right before a romance actually happens. She sings 「触れるか触れないかの距離」 (the distance where we’re just barely touching—or not touching at all), then admits 「遅くなる歩みが嬉しいの」 (I’m happy that our steps are getting slower) and immediately questions herself with 「勘違いなんかじゃないよね」 (I’m not just imagining this, right?). Even the smallest things become romantic later on: 「同じ飲み物飲んで / 同じことを言って / 同じタイミング笑って」 (drinking the same drink, saying the same thing, laughing at the same time). Mamiko also gets to show off more of her vocal range here, moving from soft singing to rhythmic phrasing, almost talk-rap, and then back into the airy chorus.
It’s a cute reminder that sometimes the best part of falling in love is the little distance before it actually happens, so maybe go back and check those first messages from when you were just starting to fall for someone.
