On July 24, Los Angeles-based Nigerian American artist Adanna Duru released her 12-track debut album, THE NAIJAMERICAN DREAM. She has also described herself as a “power alto” who is especially comfortable singing in her lower register. That part of her voice is immediately important on “Million X Over.”
The song caught my ear because it talks about commitment through ordinary routines instead of relying on huge romantic declarations. One of the sweetest images compares being with someone to watching your favorite TV show (yes, Friends) together. It is such a simple activity, but that is exactly where the intimacy comes from. Love is presented as repetition, familiarity and knowing that you still want the same person beside you after doing the same thing a million times.
Duru’s voice gives the song its weight. Her lower notes have a husky texture, while the smoother edges of her delivery keep the performance tender. There are plenty of layers in the arrangement, though each one has its own space. That separation creates the impression of simplicity: you can hear the details without hearing the track struggle to contain them.
Will be diving into the whole album more!
