Tokyo-based band Cero released their new single Globster, alongside their past single, 健忘者たち,on Friday July 17, under independent label KAKUBARHYTHM.

Cero is a Japanese band with a unique blend of genres, deriving from Jazz, R&B, techno and pop, and blending live session recorded instruments and experimental electronic production. They are known for their deeply layered sound, and emotional tracks with flawed, vulnerable and raw vocals.

The song is introduced with a short sample of wood winds and chimes, and transitions quickly into a trap beat with acoustic guitar and a wide variety of layered instrumentals, synths and samples. The sound and attitude feel intriguing and mysterious, leaning towards longing about the past.

The title, globster, refers to a marine biology term for large sea mammals that wash up on beaches, and having decomposed a long time, have become featureless and unidentifiable. The rather bold and disturbing image is used as a central metaphor for the song, with two meanings. The first has to do with memory:

A globster washed up in my brain—rotted away
My attention stolen bit by bit, day by day.

The globster seems to signify past memories, jumbling into a massive unrecognizable amalgamation, rotting and decaying the narrator’s mind. This is supported by the chorus, talking about dancing and past memories of the ocean and being with someone they loved. These memories although warm, are fading, and are destroying the narrator.

Whether standing or sitting…
In an early-spring bathtub, I dreamt of legs that wouldn’t move
….What to do with this wooden dummy I’ve somehow become?

In this way, the narrator feels they have become a globster, unmoving, unrecognizable and falling apart. Their depression and longing for the past, mixed with regret how things have went, has destroyed them and darkened how they view the world.

The price paid for turning a blind eye out of laziness
Driven into a corner, teetering on the edge
Barely managing some black instant coffee
If tomorrow is dark, well, so be it
There must still be something I’m meant to do

They have surrendered to this helplessness, believing their world has become dark and helpless, and they are barely motivated to do easy tasks. But there is still a glimmer of hope, as they ask the universe for a purpose.

As of summer of 2026, Cero is currently on their “Tour Compartment” tour, performing nationally across Japan.
